Book Review : The Ramayana in Classical Sanskrit and Prakrt Mahakavya literature - Dr. V. Raghavan

First, I would like to start this review by humbly surrendering and bowing down to the magnificence of Sri Rama, whose stories inspires and energises generations. I strongly feel it was his will and immense blessings on Dr. V. Raghavan to come up with this rarest precious gem. AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. As I complete the book, an overwhelming sense is sweeping over mind, which is still grappling with some serious questions. Just how did Dr. V. Raghavan come up with this book in that age? We need to understand the complexity and enormity of the task at hand. This book is constructed from the lectures delivered by Dr. V. Raghavan in 1977. Of course, I am reminded of similar magnificent book, “Lectures on the Ramayana” by Rt. Hon. V. S. Srinivasa Sastri. However, the intellectual depth and breadth exhibited by the author is just too enormous to even comprehend, let alone fathom.

The book is about Dr. V. Raghavan’s analysis of the most popular Ramayana renditions across various stalwarts of Sanskrit & Prakrit literature namely, Kalidasa, Pravarasena, Kumaradasa, Bhatti, Abhinanda, Bhoja and Ksemendra. In each of these works, Dr. V. Raghavan provides a very clinical analysis of similarities and differences / deviations of the renditions with the golden reference of Valmiki Ramayana. It should be noted that Valmiki Ramayana itself has multiple recessions, which are thoroughly cross-referenced by the author. Considering that this work was done in a pre-computer era with no digital documentation or searching, everything boils to the scholarship, dedication and absolute devotion to the topic at hand. COMPLETE BRILLIANCE.

Dr. V. Raghavan takes every single event from each of the epics above and compares with the traditional telling of Valmiki Ramayana. For example, Ahalya episode, Manthara, Sampati conversation.. Every single aspect is analysed in depth. In fact, Dr. Raghavan goes to the extent of breaking down the individual verses / words and analysing the potential interpretations, delving into the thought process of the geniuses who composed these classics centuries ago. The consistency in ensuring that the same key event (another example is the Crow episode) is analysed across all epics under consideration. While the analytical and comparison is thrilling enough, Dr. Raghavan also highlights the poetic brilliance of the authors to extend the narrative or blend in their own imagination to potentially explain some of the unknown facets of Ramayana.

This book is a prime example of how research and analysis should be performed. The intellectual depth can’t even be imagined. If you are a student of Sanskrit / Prakrit literature or Ramayana enthusiast or an ardent devotee of Sri Rama, this book is a MUST HAVE, MUST READ book on your shelves.

ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE. My humble salutations to the author whose genius we are lucky and blessed to savor.

Movie Review: Su from So - My take

(Pic Credit: Wiki) Su from So or rather Sulochana from Someshwara is a blockbuster movie running in the theatres to house full shows. And for good reason.. This is a masterpiece .. an absolute masterclass in story telling, script and layering of multiple nuances in the most simplistic of situations. There are reviews galore and it would be absolutely useless to write a review about the movie. However, after coming out of the movie hall, I reflected on the movie and the undertones of the various characters (specifically the emotional arcs) embedded brilliantly into the narrative. This is my attempt to capture some thoughts rummaging through my mind as I walked out of the theatre. Small mistakes have huge snowball consequences Ashoka makes a mistake. To ...

Temple Circuit : Haasanmba - Doddagaddavalli - Hiremagalur - Belavadi - Javagal

A spur of the moment decision, next I know we are planning or rather packing for this day trip to have the darshana of the very divine Hasaanamba Devi. Multiple attempts in the previous year landed up with disappointments and hence, I was eager to have her darshana this time around. Along with a couple of my colleagues, the family of one of them joined us in this trip. It was such a blessing to be in the presence and to listen to the timeless wisdom of the elders of the group. The entire trip was a very happy family experience, with the elder couple caring for all of us as their own children.
We started from Bengaluru around 5:45 am. Enroute we stopped at MTR on Bengaluru - Hassan highway and treated ourselves to a sumptuous breakfast. Food is really good here !!! Haasanamba Temple
A very divine temple nestled within the Haasan city, a much revered Devi whose darshana is available only for a specific period in a year. First and the foremost, we need to thank the Government, di...

In Memorium : S. L. Bhyrappa

Words are just insufficient to describe the sense of loss of a great person for the country, for the society and personally for me. One of my friends asked me to speak about SLB sir, but no matter how hard I tried, mind didn’t cooperate. Perhaps, it required some sinking in about the loss of an individual as accomplished, influential master like him. I am sure there are many more accomplished writers and authors who have worked closely with SLB sir and have written eloquently about the great man. I tried to put to words what impact he had on me in my life. To describe S. L. Bhyrappa in words is to attempt to describe an ocean holding a fistful of water. The impact of his words on his audience was very individual, but highly impactful. I found SLB sir quite late (on relative terms) in my life. Though I had heard and read about him in papers, I never took up the courage to go and start reading his books. Perhaps, it was providence that I found his writings at a time when I was searc...
