Book Review: Spiritual Guidelines for Managerial Excellence - Dr. A. Jagan Mohan Reddy

My salutations to the holy feet of the parama Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada and to the holy feet of the current Jagadgurus of Sringeri Sharada Peeta. This book is also brought out by Tattvaloka team as a collection of articles on this topic over the course of time. Dr. Reddy is an educator cum researcher having donned many roles across his rich experience in the industry and teaching. He loves teaching and counselling, while guiding the next generation on Ph.Ds.

Management is a topic of immense interest and research across time. Though the terminologies may be introduced in the modern age, the core principles have always been part of our cultural history across time. Dr. Reddy expands on the various tenets of the management drawing inspiration and lessons from our rich repository of knowledge i.e. Vedas, Upanishads, Itihasas, Puranas. The author’s wide knowledge base is evident in the references spanning from Bharatha’s own history to Greek Mythology. The book is filled with rich anecdotes and examples and makes for a great reference / inspiration for one and alike.

The book is composed of 4 sections - Spirituality in Workplace, Enhancing Human Capital, Self Management & Governance and Corporate responsibility. In each of these sections, there are dedicated chapters on specific tenets / principles that the author is trying to expand upon. Srimad Valmiki Ramayana and Srimad Bhagwad Gita forms a large part of the references. The author has taken many unique incidents / slokas from these epics and explains the relevance of the principles in the modern context. Sri Rama is definitely a great inspiration to the author and to the universe in general.

There are references from Ishopanishad, Brhadaranyaka Upanishads as well as Chanakya Neeti. As one proceeds with the book, some of the references of Ramayana and Gita may repeat owing to their universal appeal in multitude of situations. Quotes from Ralph Waldo Emerson, Booker T Washington augment the rich knowledge base in the book.

The book is a great inspiration for everyone, whether they are managers in profession or not. This book is more about self-reflection, self-improvement and more importantly self-management. Management starts with the self, a point which is reiterated multiple times at various junctures in the book. The book does make one major impression on the readers: Spirituality has a constant presence in life across all spheres and is part of our identity and being.

DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READ. I would definitely recommend this to young adults (15-20 year olds) who will embark on the transition from Academics to work in years to come. This is equally applicable to the older folk to reflect, review and reform.

Movie Review: Su from So - My take

(Pic Credit: Wiki) Su from So or rather Sulochana from Someshwara is a blockbuster movie running in the theatres to house full shows. And for good reason.. This is a masterpiece .. an absolute masterclass in story telling, script and layering of multiple nuances in the most simplistic of situations. There are reviews galore and it would be absolutely useless to write a review about the movie. However, after coming out of the movie hall, I reflected on the movie and the undertones of the various characters (specifically the emotional arcs) embedded brilliantly into the narrative. This is my attempt to capture some thoughts rummaging through my mind as I walked out of the theatre. Small mistakes have huge snowball consequences Ashoka makes a mistake. To ...

Temple Circuit : Haasanmba - Doddagaddavalli - Hiremagalur - Belavadi - Javagal

A spur of the moment decision, next I know we are planning or rather packing for this day trip to have the darshana of the very divine Hasaanamba Devi. Multiple attempts in the previous year landed up with disappointments and hence, I was eager to have her darshana this time around. Along with a couple of my colleagues, the family of one of them joined us in this trip. It was such a blessing to be in the presence and to listen to the timeless wisdom of the elders of the group. The entire trip was a very happy family experience, with the elder couple caring for all of us as their own children.
We started from Bengaluru around 5:45 am. Enroute we stopped at MTR on Bengaluru - Hassan highway and treated ourselves to a sumptuous breakfast. Food is really good here !!! Haasanamba Temple
A very divine temple nestled within the Haasan city, a much revered Devi whose darshana is available only for a specific period in a year. First and the foremost, we need to thank the Government, di...

In Memorium : S. L. Bhyrappa

Words are just insufficient to describe the sense of loss of a great person for the country, for the society and personally for me. One of my friends asked me to speak about SLB sir, but no matter how hard I tried, mind didn’t cooperate. Perhaps, it required some sinking in about the loss of an individual as accomplished, influential master like him. I am sure there are many more accomplished writers and authors who have worked closely with SLB sir and have written eloquently about the great man. I tried to put to words what impact he had on me in my life. To describe S. L. Bhyrappa in words is to attempt to describe an ocean holding a fistful of water. The impact of his words on his audience was very individual, but highly impactful. I found SLB sir quite late (on relative terms) in my life. Though I had heard and read about him in papers, I never took up the courage to go and start reading his books. Perhaps, it was providence that I found his writings at a time when I was searc...
